ESA Licensed Electrical Contractor
What is the ESA and Why is an Inspection Necessary?
ESA stands for "Electrical Safety Authority" and is an administrative body that was created by the Government of Ontario to improve public electrical safety in the province.
The purpose of the ESA is to identify and target safety risks related to electrical systems. They do this by ensuring compliance with provincial and federal regulation through inspection via licensed contractors.
Whenever you are planning on doing electrical work, you should contact a licensed electrical contractor to ensure that the Electrical Safety Authority has officially inspected all of the work.
By ensuring that the work is up to code, you protect yourself and your family from potentially dangerous situations. Inspections are there for the safety and peace of mind of you and your family. They help ensure electrical work complies with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The Electrical Safety Authority does half a million inspections of electrical work in Ontario every year.
Electrical Work in Your Home
Three Things You Should Know:
1. Hire only a Licensed Electrical Contractor. It’s the law in Ontario that if you, your general contractor or designer are hiring someone to do electrical work in your home, it must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Always ask for their electrical contractor’s licence number from ECRA/ESA. It should be on their business card, estimate and their vehicle. You can verify or find a Licensed Electrical Contractor in your area on esasafe.com.
2. Ensure the required permit is taken out.
Virtually all electrical work requires a permit (also called an Application for Inspection) from ESA. An electrical permit creates a permanent record of the electrical work that has been done in your home and it triggers a review process by ESA. This is an added safeguard for you and your family.
3. Ask for an ESA Certificate of Inspection.
This is important for resale, insurance and peace of mind. Only ESA can issue a Certificate of Inspection for electrical work in Ontario. The certificate is issued to the permit holder once the inspection process is complete.
